Bonnie "Once upon a time hundreds of years ago, there was a dreadfully notorious pirate captain by the name of Robin Redbeard."
Bonnie "He was the scourge of exactly five-and-a-half seas, or six-and-five-eighths if you count inland seas and gulfs."
Bonnie "The captain of every galleon, schooner, barge, yacht, ferry, skiff, sloop, and most canoes shivered in their skivvies at the thought of meeting him. Women swooned at the mention of his name."
Bonnie "Anyone who got just one good look at ol' Rob's face would immediately hand over all their valuables, lickety-split."
Player "Was he really that dangerous?"
Bonnie "Dangerous? Oh, no no no."
Bonnie "Robin Redbeard abhorred violence. Wouldn't even squash a spider with his boots. Although maybe he just hated washing off the spider goop."
Player "Then why would people just fork over their stuff? And shudder and faint and all that?"
Bonnie "Because everyone who saw Robin Redbeard fell hopelessly in love with him. Man or woman, straight or otherwise, it didn't matter."
Bonnie "He had the face of a god and the voice of an angel. Everyone who met him adored him and did his bidding without question... That is, except one."
      Player "And that was...?"
Bonnie "Ahh... That was Conie. Conie the mermaid."
Bonnie "One fateful morning, Robin Redbeard took out his spyglass and espied the comeliest maiden he'd ever seen, sunning herself atop a rock as she combed her raven tresses."
Bonnie "But alas! Conie spurned his advances and ridiculed his proposals of marriage. When he persisted, she finally consented under one condition only."
Bonnie "She would wed him if and only if Rob presented her with the mythical jewel known as Tear of the King Fish—or was it Tear of the Kingfisher?"
Bonnie "Well, whatever. Anyway, Rob vowed he would find it and set off on a grand voyage to discover the beautiful gem Conie desired."
Bonnie "Many perils and adventures befell him on his quest—hurricanes, sea monsters, amnesia, seductive enchantresses and more, far too many to relate here. But one menace towered above all the rest..."
      Bonnie "...scurvy."
      Player "Scurvy?"
Bonnie "<worried> A dreadful, deadly disease caused by Vitamin C deficiency. It covers your body in terrible pus-filled wounds, makes your skin turn yellow and your teeth fall out."
Bonnie "In those days however, the cause of scurvy wasn't known. Every man who made his living by the sea, whether outlaw, in-law, or bylaw lawyer, lived in fear of contracting it."
Bonnie "One by one, Robin Redbeard's crew succumbed to the fatal illness until he too was stricken. Robbed of his good looks, his once-besotted crew began to plot mutiny."
Bonnie "But he still had his angelic voice, so all was well as long as he was awake. Once he fell asleep, the crew would resume their scheming and grumbling."
Bonnie "Would he meet his end from scurvy, or at the hands of his somewhat-loyal crew? That thought haunted his feverish dreams."
Bonnie "But just when the end seemed nigh, lo and behold! The sweet sight of land appeared on the horizon."
Bonnie "When the crew made landfall, they discovered groves of wild orange trees. Everyone hungrily devoured the fresh fruit, which naturally cured their scurvy."
Bonnie "Believing they had discovered a miraculous fruit that would cure all ills, Robin Redbeard and his crew founded a town there and lived happily ever after."
      Player "What about Conie?"
Bonnie "He forgot all about her when he suffered amnesia. And she forgot all about him a day or two after he left."
