You should analyze disk or partition before restoring any files from it. Select the disk in the list in the top left corner of the program window and click the "Analyze" button on the toolbar. Handy Recovery will start building the tree of folders and files. Now you can browse the content of the disk.
You can start recovering files even if disk analysis is not finished. As the analysis continues, the program will show more files available for recovering.
You should avoid saving recovered file to the same disk, because new copy of it can overwrite the old one and other lost files. This will decrease the probability of successful recovery. This is especially important if you recover large files.
You can use "Filter" button on the toolbar, if you want to browse only deleted files and folders.
You can use "Filter" button on the toolbar, if you want to see only files of a certain type or with names satisfying a mask or a keyword.
You can use "Filter" button on the toolbar to filter files by date or size.
If you do not remember the exact path to the file that you want to recover, click the "Find file" button on the toolbar. The "Find" dialog will appear. You can input either file mask or just a part of the file name and click the "Find next" button. You can repeat this operation to find a next matching file.
You can recover files from partitions that were lost after disk formatting. Click the "Find Partitions" button on the toolbar. In the dialog select the physical disk that contained the lost partition and click "Ok". The program will search for all lost partitions and add them to the list of drives. Now you can select a partition and click the "Analyze" button to see its content.
You can create disk image files containing exact images of logical drives. This way you can save all information contained on a drive including deleted files. You can open disk image file later and recover lost files from it.
If you have analyzed the disk where your deleted files were stored and still cannot find your files in the folder where they were located, you can perform extended analysis of the disk and try to find them by type. The "Extended analysis..." option will appear in the bottom left corner of the program window when the regular analysis is complete. For FAT drives this type of analysis is included in the general analysis procedure.
You can right click on any file and choose "View" from the menu to open the sector view window. Here you can browse the low level content of the file.
The analysis of a large disk can take long time. If you need to restart the program or work with another disk and then return back to the current one, you can save current recovery session to a special file and load it later. In this case you will not need to perform the analysis again. Note however that only the information obtained during analysis process is saved in this case, not the whole content of the disk.
